Men's Soccer Edged by Vassar in Season Opener, 2-1

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Montclair State University Men's Soccer team fell to Vassar 2-1 to open the 2026 campaign on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (0-1-0) opened the game on the front foot with a pair of shots from TYLER DIAZ and KEVIN CONTRERAS in the first two and a half minutes. Montclair continued to search for the breakthrough goal, as Diaz ripped a shot on goal that was collected by the Brewers keeper. The home side answered over the next ten minutes with a trio of shots that were stopped by PIERRE SOUMEILLANT. 
  • Shortly after that sequence, Vassar broke the scoring open in the 28th minute. Following a shot that went above the bar from the Brewers, BRANDEN CADIGAN sent a shot on frame that was collected by Vassar, who would take a slim one-goal margin into the halftime break.
  • The Brewers doubled their advantage 66 seconds into the second half with a goal shortly after a foul call. Soumeillant notched another stop in the 52nd minute, leading to a shot on goal six minutes later from JOSH VIRGIL. Eight minutes after, TOMAS MONTEIRO tallied another shot on goal for the Red Hawks that was scooped up by the home keeper.
  • SEBASTIAN LAPCZYNSKI continued the offensive push for Montclair in the 65th minute, ripping a shot that was collected towards the crossbar. A few minutes later, KYLE MOORE sent a shot towards the frame that rang off the woodwork. Montclair cut the gap in half in the 79th minute, as Moore and Cadigan combined for a sequence that set up for a goal from Monteiro. The Red Hawks recorded three more shots over the final 10 minutes, but were unable to find the equalizer.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Monteiro's goal marked the 10th of his collegiate career across 20 games.
  • Moore's assist was the fourth of his career, with Cadigan collecting the first of his collegiate career.
  • Soumeillant finished the evening with five saves in net for the Red Hawks.
  • The Red Hawks held a slim 15-13 edge in shots for the contest.
