Field Hockey Rallies and Wins Double-Overtime Thriller at Wilkes

Wilkes-Barre, PA – Despite seeing a first-quarter deficit, the Montclair State University field hockey team (1-1) put together a gritty performance and rallied to defeat Wilkes University (0-2) in a thrilling double-overtime win, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Colonels of Wilkes University took the lead midway through the first quarter, starting the game 1-0 at the 7:30 mark.
  • Wilkes went back on the attack in the second, but two key saves by SYDNEY WHITE off penalty corners kept it a one-possession game. The Red Hawks went on the attack in the latter stages of the second period. The team saw four penalty corners and two shots. KASEY WATSON generated the best chance to score with a shot on goal at the 26:53 timestamp, but had her shot saved. Montclair took the 1-0 deficit into the halftime intermission.
  • The Red Hawks came out of the locker room strong at halftime and found their way to break the deficit and tie the game 1-1. Freshman OLIVIA ENT set up Sophomore Collen McGavin as she slotted it in the back of the cage at the 34:01 mark. Montclair had another opportunity with a last-minute penalty corner in the third, but EMMA BIANCO's shot went wide, and the game remained tied entering the fourth.
  • A yellow card on the Red Hawks set Wilkes up with an excellent opportunity to regain the lead, but the Montclair defense tightened up and allowed only one shot to go wide. AVA SCURRY had two chances back-to-back to take the lead in regulation but was denied by the Wilkes' goalkeeper, and the 1-1 tie went into overtime.
  • Scoring opportunities were there for both teams in the first overtime period. Wilkes went on the attack first and was stonewalled by White, who had five minutes of extra time. In the 66th minute, Montclair saw two shots go wide of the goal, and Wilkes had one more shot blocked in the 68th. Scurry and McGavin each tried to end the game in the first overtime, but another big pair of saves by Wilkes sent the game into another overtime.
  • The Montclair offense came through in the second overtime period. They went right on the attack and after a few more shots on goal by SAM SUBOKOW and Scurry, Watson found Ent for the game-winner to help Montclair pick up a thrilling road win.

INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Montclair State finished with 15 shots and 10 on goal and generated eight penalty corners. They outperformed Wilkes in both those marks.
  • White earned the win and came up big in spots with four saves.
  • Ent's first collegiate goal could not have been better, firing in the first overtime winner for the Red Hawks since 2023 (2-1 double-overtime win against DeSales on September 6). She finished with a goal and an assist for three points.
FROM THE FIELD
