John Brennan is in his fourth season at the Montclair State serving as the head coach for the Red Hawk women's cross country and indoor/outdoor track and field teams.He was named to the position in May 2015.
Brennan, a former student-athlete for the Red Hawks, returned to his alma mater following a very successful tenure at Division II Felician College, where he had been involved since the program's inception in 2000. He was named the head coach in 2002 after two years as an assistant to Felician Athletics Hall of Famer Bob Symons.
Brennan guided the Golden Falcon men to their ninth Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship in 2011. The men's team won five consecutive CACC titles under Brennan from 2004-08. A six-time CACC Men's Coach of the Year, he has coached six conference Runners of the Year -- Shakira Williams (2003), Amanda Scibetta (2006), Paul Chegwidden (2007), James Vander Wiele (2008), and Rob Albano (2011 and 2012) -- two Rookies of the Year, and 68 all-league performers.
Prior to joining Felician, Brennan was the head cross-country and track & field coach at Verona High School. In 1999-2000, Verona won the girls state sectional in cross-country and outdoor track, both for the first time in school history. He has also been the head coach at the Wardlaw Hartridge School and an assistant at Montclair State under the late Gerald "Bennie" Benson.
Brennan earned a BA in history in 1994 and an MA in administration and supervision in 2000 from Montclair State. He was an All-New Jersey Athletic Conference selection in the 10,000 meters in 1992 and set the school indoor mark in the 5,000 two years prior. Brennan was the recipient of the Montclair State Track and Field Scholar Athlete Award in 1992.
