Shannon Howley was named the Associate Director of Athletics in November 2019.

In her role, Howley collaborates across the University to help elevate the Red Hawk Athletics brand in addition to overseeing the athletic department’s support services. As the department’s chief fundraiser, Howely partners with the University’s Development office to increase support for the University’s 18 athletics teams. She will also oversee a comprehensive content-production program for the department’s official website, montclairathletics.com, in partnership with Montclair State’s School of Communication and Media, and will work with the University’s Communications and Marketing division to publicize the achievements of the institution’s more than 400 student-athletes.

Howley came to Montclair State from Georgian Court University, where she served as Assistant Director of Athletics for operations. In her role, she oversaw the women’s soccer, cross country, and track and field programs in addition to negotiating new contracts for equipment and department apparel providers.

Howley also assisted in helping bring the National Women’s Soccer League’s Sky Blue FC to the Lakewood, N.J. campus, and created a successful marketing plan to highlight the relationship between the team and the University. She also oversaw the maintenance, function and improvement of athletic facilities with the assistance of the facilities, grounds, and maintenance staffs and served as the tournament director for the CACC Festival, a four-day championship event for softball, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, and track and field.

Before her tenure at Georgian Court, Howley spent 10 years at Elmira College as Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Compliance Officer and Game Management Assistant. Very much accustomed to the jack-of-all-trades mentality that is common at smaller institutions, Howley also served as Sports Information Director (2008-13) and Head Women’s Cross Country Coach (2013-16) during her tenure at Elmira.

Prior to Elmira, Howley spent four years at Arcadia University (Glenside, Pa.) as Assistant Athletic Director, Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Compliance Officer and Assistant Sports Information Director.

A graduate of Radford University (Radford, Va.) with a Bachelor of Science in communications, Howley also earned a Master of Education during her time at Arcadia University.
