Merz set a school record and tied the NCAA record for longest interception return as he capped off an incredible comeback by Montclair State in a 55-49 win over the College at Brockport on Sunday as the game was pushed to Sunday in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. MSU trailed 28-0 in the second quarter of the game but rallied back and led 42-35 before Brockport tied the game sending it to overtime. After each team scored a touchdown on its first possession, Brockport got the ball first in the second OT and moved the ball to the Montclair 5 when it faced an third-and-goal. Golden Eagle quarterback Joe Scibilia took the snap and tried to hit his receiver near the fron pylon of the end zone. But Merz, who also had two tackles in the game, stepped in front of the pass and raced down the sideline virtually untouched for the game-winning score. Merz broke the previous record of 99 yards set by Robert Pitts against Ithaca on September 19, 1992.
