Montclair Wins Series on Horn Homer in 10th

Marietta, OH - The team that refused to quit, Montclair State, added another dramatic ending to its storybook season yesterday when LEROY HORN socked a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to hand the New Jersey team its first NCAA Division 3 World Series championship.

Montclair State became the first team to sweep through as six-team World Series field when Horn hit a 3-1 pitch over the 370-foot mark in right center to give the Indians a 13-12 victory over Wisconsin-Oshkosh at Pioneer Park.

The Indians (34-14-1), which had failed to win in five previous trips to the World Series, won all four games, two in extra innings, to take the 12th edition of the Division 3 series.

"This is a team that never quits," said Horn echoing what his teammates had been saying all weekend. " It wasn't looking to drive it out, I was just looking to drive it somewhere. As soon as I hit it, I knew it was out."

Horn, who had homered in his very first World Series at bat on Thursday gave Montclair a series record of six homers in a game with his blast and put the finishing touches on a great see-saw battle.

Montclair had led 5-2, 6-3 and 9-6 before Wisconsin-Oshkosh (37-4), which needed to defeat the Indians twice to win the double-elimination tournament, scored five times in the top of the seventh t take an 11-9 lead.

PEPE HERRERO's bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh cut the Montclair deficit to 11-10.

It looked like the Indians would win the game in the bottom of the ninth when shortstop JIM FASANO hit the first pitch from losing reliever Brian Wessley (8-3) down the line over the 330-foot maker for a homer and an 11-11 score.

"I noticed that each inning he would throw a fastball to the first batter to get ahead," said Fasano, who hit his seventh homer. "I was looking for something I could hit out."

JOHN DEUTSCH, who smashed two homers in the game was votes as the Most Valuable Player, then singled with one away, bringing Herrero to the plate Herrero jumped on the first pitch and hit a drive that seemed destined for home run territory. But Oshkosh left fielder Pat McDonald made a sensational catch, running with his back to home plate and grabbing the ball with a high leap before crashing into the fence. McDonald, who caught his foot in the fence after the catch, tossed the ball to center fielder Mike Messenger, who made the relay to catch Deutsch, who was just reaching third, for an inning-ending double play.

" As soon as Pepe hit it, I thought it was over the fence," said Deutsch, who hit three homers and drove in 10 runs in the series, "It was a great catch, one of the best I've ever seen."

The Titans from Oshksh, having regained the momentum, took a 12-11 lead in the top f the 10th by getting back-to-back doubles by Kevin Murdock and Brucne Schreiber. An error gave the Titans runners on first and second with one out when Montclair coach Kevin Cooney brought in righthander WAYNE MASTERS.

The sophomore threw just three pitches, getting Todd Schliem to bounce one toward PETE DIAZ at third. Diaz stepped on third and threw to first for the Indians' second double-play of the game and their nine twin killing of the series.

Those three pitches made Masters (6-1) the winner, thanks to Horn, and gave him a 3-0 mark in the World Series, which established a record. The 5-10 Masters had won the first two games in relief.

MIKE WENRICH led off the Montclair 10th with a single to left and JOHN LIPINSKI came in to pinch run. Horn then unladed his opposite-field shot and circled the bases with his right arm in th air.

"This is the greatest feeling," said Horn, who owns an NCAA football record 310 yard rushing in one half. "This is definitely better than the 310 yards. Anybody who plays college sports would like to win a national championship. Nothing can top this."

The heroes were many for Montclair, which had 18 hits and three apiece from KEVIN CAVALLO, Deutsch and Herrero.

The Indians had scored three runs with none away in the first when JOHN MCCLAIN his a high blast over the right field wall for a three-run homer.

The 6-6, 235-pound Deutsch, who batted .528 with 10 hits and eight runs scored in the series, led off the fifth with a shot that cleared the right-field wall fr his 21st homer and a 6-3 Indian lead. Cavallo led off the sixth with an opposite-field homer to right center to give Montclair a 7-6 edge. McClain walked with one out before Deutsch stepped to the plate and belted a no-doubt-about-it homer that easily cleared the fence in right center for a 9-6 score.

That home gave Deutsch 22 for the second and gave the sophomore a share of the career homer lead, tying the 29 hit by Steve Lipinski in his four seasons at Montclair. It also increased his RBI record to 77 for the season.

"The way we eon summed up our whole season" said Deutsch. "That was the way the game had to be won."

Four Montclair pitchers had given up 10 walks and hit three batters to help Oshkosh along. Six of those runners who drew free passes wound up scoring.

Horn's homer overshadowed a great day at the plate by Oshkosh's Terry Jorgensen, wh had four hits, including a three-run homer, and knocked in six runs.

"The fact that I never thought we would be here makes this more satisfying," said Cooney. "I didn't expect to win this, but nobody told the players that."

Montclair becomes the third college from the Garden State to tin the series. Glassboro State won back-to-back titles in 1978 and 1979 and Ramapo took it in 1984.
