Montclair Splits at California Invitational

Red Hawks Batter UMass-Dartmouth in Second Game

Claremont, CA – The Montclair State baseball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday as the Red Hawks split their final two contests in the California Invitational.

The Red Hawks (4-2-1) were blanked by Pomona-Pitzer, 8-0 before bouncing back with a 15-4 win against Massachusetts-Dartmouth.

Montclair State was handcuffed by Pomona-Pitzer starter Charles Einsiedler, who tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout striking out two. Senior right hander GEORGE GALLAGHER took the loss for MSU.

The Sagehens snapped a scoreless game in the fourth with three runs, two coming off the bat of Jose Cortez, who launched a two-run homer. Pomona-Pitzer put the game away in the ninth with five runs, two coming off the bat of Ryan Gould, who stroked a two-run single.

After being shut down in the opener, the Red Hawk bats came back to life against UMass-Dartmouth as Montclair registered 16 hits. CHRIS BARAN was 3-for-4 while CRAIG CONWAY, Gallagher, BRIAN ELLERSON, Don Nelson and JEFF SCHRIBER had two each.

Montclair State scored once in the first inning and added three more in the second to extend its lead to 4-0. Baran had a two-run single with Conway, who finished with four RBI, lofting a sacrifice fly. The Corsairs countered with two runs in the second and another in the third to pull within 4-3, but Montclair scored the next 11 runs.

Conway cleared the bases with a double during a six-run fourth inning. Gallagher and Longo also had RBI doubles with BRIAN ELLERSON getting an RBI single making the score, 10-3.

The Red Hawks plated five more in the fifth to finish off the win. Baran brought home a run with a base hit and MARC HOUSER tripled in two more. Ellerson collected his second RBI on a double with Don Nelson capping the MSU scoring on a run-scoring single.

Junior left hander SCOTT ALLAN got the victory, his first of the season, as he allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings. Allan struck out four and walked four.

MSU is back in action on Tuesday, March 14 taking on Chapman University.
