Everyone Contributes to MSU Victory

Mahwah, NJ - With first base open in the top of the sixth inning, Ramapo coach Dan Palumbo ordered an intentional walk to MARC HOUSER, filling the bases. It was the percentage move. After all, it broought up Montclair State's No. 9 batter, JEFF SCHRIBER.

But lately it seems as if all the percentages are in Montclair State's favor.

Schriber spoiled the strategy by lining a full count pitch down the left field line for a two-run single Friday, giving Montclair State a five-run lead. The hit was the highlight of a five-run inning that sealed the RedHawks' 13-2 victory over Ramapo. MSU improved to 20-3-1, and 8-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Red Hawks stayed a half-game behind first-place Rowan (21-4, 9-1), which beat Rutgers-Camden, 11-5.

"That is a very, very good team," Palumbo said of Montclair State. "From top to bottom, every position, on the field and on the mound. I'm glad we don't have to play them again." Montclair beat Ramapo, 8-2, in their other meeting on March 31.

Every member of Montclair's starting lineup had at least ne hit, and that feat was accomplished before MSU coach Norm Schoenig began substituting liberally in the seventh inning with the Red Hawks holding a 10-2 lead.

Schriber went 3-fr-3 with two runs scored and three RBI, while leadoff hitter DAVE WURST scored twice and drove in three runs. MSU finished with 13 hits.

While the Red Hawks did commit two errors, the game ended on an outstanding play by shortstop BRIAN ELLERSON, who ranged far into the hold to grab Bobby Woods' grounder with two out in the ninth, and threw to second for a game-ending force play.

Not that MSU starter GREG BELSON needed that much defensive help in this one. The senior right-hander allowed on earned run over eight innings and struck out 11.

"I felt pretty good," Belson said. "Everything was working except my change-up."

"He threw the ball well and he located well," Schoenig said. "He pitched well when the scored was 5-2 and gave us a chance to score more runs."

Schoenig also was pleased with his team's execution. "They've made real good use in games of the things we do in practice,"  he said. Such as in the second inning, when Schriber faked a bunt and executed a perfect hit-and-run RBI single through the vacated hole by second baseman Carl Lorelli. The hit keyed a three-run inning that gave MSU a 5-0 lead. "Everyone is staying focused and concentrating on what they're doing," Schriber said.

Lorelli had an RBI ground out and Jon Canter hit a run-scoring single in the second to pull Ramapo (12-10, 4-5) within 5-2 but MSU put the game away with the five-run sixth that also included a two-run double by Wurst.

"Hopefully, we can kep rolling and keep playing this way the rest of the year," Belson said.
