GEORGE GALLAGHER homered and drove in three runs as Montclair State, ranked No. 5 in Division III, extended its winning streak to 10 with an 11-1 victory over Rutgers-Newark at Riverfront Stadium on Thursday.
Junior lefthander
SCOTT ALLAN allowed a run and four hits over seven innings as the Red Hawks (23-3-1, 11-1 NJAC) swept the season set from the Scarlet Raiders. MSU posted a 5-3 win at home on April 6.
Gallagher gave Montclair State a 2-0 lead in the first inning after the Raiders retired the first two hitters.
CRAIG CONWAY walked and came around on Gallagher's two-run shot three pitches later.
BRIAN ELLERSON followed with a double and scored on an RBI single by
FRANK FRANCIA, who came home on a double by
MARC HOUSER for the 4-0 lead.
Conway's sacrifice fly in the second made it a five-run advantage and the lead went to 6-1 in the fifth. Ellerson singled to left field scoring Conway, who reached on a one-out base hit.
The Red Hawks tacked on four more runs in the sixth.
FRANK LONGO had a sac fly and
CHRIS BARAN singled in another making the score, 8-1. Baran would score on a wild pitch and Ellerson's RBI single widened the lead to 10-1.
GARY BRACHT recorded the final MSU run in the seventh with an RBI single.
Allan (5-0) struck out three and walked four before giving way to
KEVIN RAKOWSKI-KUHLMAN, who struck out the side in the eighth innings.
STEVE TRONGONE finished off the game, fanning one in the ninth.
Ellerson was 4-for-5 with Gallagher and
SEAN MORRISON each collecting two hits.
ADAM CERMINARO scored twice as did Conway and Gallagher.
Montclair State hosts Kean University on Friday, April 21 at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Red Hawks will be looking to sweep the season series from the Cougars having posted an 11-8 win in Union on April 7.
