DAVE WURST had three hits and drove in two runs as Montclair State held off a Kean University rally in the ninth for an 11-8 victory on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore shortstop
BRIAN ELLERSON belted a home run and came on to earn a save as MSU (16-3-1, 5-1 NJAC) won its third straight and was victorious for the 13
th time in its last 14 contests. Jamie Ioviero had three hits and three RBI for the Cougars (14-4, 2-3 NJAC).
A sacrifice fly by
CRAIG CONWAY and RBI single by
GEORGE GALLAGHER in the third gave Montclair a 2-0 lead however, Kean quickly tied the game in the fourth. Chris Eickhorst singled in Ioviero deadlocking the contest.
Montclair would open up an 8-2 lead scoring three times each in the sixth and seventh innings. Two miscues by the Cougars allowed the three runs to cross in the sixth before Francia tripled home two in the seven with Wurst adding a sacrifice fly.
Kean would get a run in the seventh and another in the eighth to get within four, but Montclair tacked on three in the top of the ninth to widen its advantage. Ellerson blasted a solo home run and Wurst delivered an RBI single. Baran followed with a base hit scoring
SCOTT ALLAN as Montclair State led 11-4.
The Cougars did not go quietly in the ninth, scoring four times. Craig Palmer had an RBI single and later scored on a balk. Ioviero singled in two more closing the gap to 11-8. Ellerson came on walked the first batter bringing the tying run to the plate. But the righthander, who notched his third save, struck out the next hitter and got a fielder's choice to close out the game.
Senior right-hander
GREG BELSON (5-0) earned the victory as he went the first 7 1/3 innings. Belson allowed four runs and eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Wurst finished 3-for-4 while Ellerson went 3-for-5 at the plate.
