Gallagher Homers Twice as No. 2 Red Hawks Win Slugfest, 16-10

Red Hawks Top Johns Hoppkins

Baltimore, MD – Senior GEORGE GALLAGHER launched a pair of homers and also gutted hit way to a victory on the mound as No. 2-ranked Montclair State made it 16 straight victories outlasting Johns Hopkins in a slugfest, 16-10 on Tuesday.

CRAIG CONWAY drove in three runs and SEAN MORRISON homered as the Red Hawks (29-3-1) extended their longest winning streak since capturing 19 in a row during the 1994 campaign.

Montclair State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning as MARC HOUSER singled to center scoring BRIAN ELLERSON. SCOTT CLARK followed with an RBI single.  The Blue Jays (26-9), tied the game in their half as Ben Taylor smacked a two-run home to tie the game.

The Red Hawks exploded for 10 runs in the third sending 13 batters to the plate, including Gallagher who homered twice in the frame. Conway plated the first run with an RBI double before Gallagher belted the first of his two home runs. Houser's second RBI on a single made the score 6-2 and a DAVE WURST base hit brought in another. FRANK LONGO and Conway each drove in runs on base hits for a seven-run advantage. Gallagher capped the scoring with his second home run, a three-run shot giving Montclair State a 12-2 lead.

MSU would go up 14-3 in the fifth on Morrison's solo home run, however Johns Hopkins answered with seven runs in its half to close the gap to 14-10.

Reliever STEVE TRONGONE came on to relieve Gallagher and made sure the Blue Jays got no closer, retiring all 12 batters he faced to record his first save. Gallagher got the victory to up his record to 5-2.

Conway, who was 4-for-4, collected his third RBI in the sixth on a single with Ellerson adding a run-scoring double in the ninth for the final run.

Ellerson finished 3-for-6 as he extended his hitting streak to 14 games.  Wurst, Longo, Gallagher, Houser, Schriber and SCOTT CLARK had two hits apiece for MSU, which recorded 22 in the game.

Montclair continues its schedule on Wednesday, May 3 with a doubleheader against Stockton at Yogi Berra Stadium.
