Women's Soccer Knocks Off Stockton in Overtime

Upper Montclair, NJ – Freshman forward STEPHANIE SABALIAUSKAS (Edison, NJ/Mt. St. Mary Academy) scored on a header in the 118th minute as defending champion and second seed Montclair State topped third-seeded Richard Stockton, 1-0 in the semifinals of the 2001 ECAC Division III Metro Women's Soccer Championship at Sprague Field.

Montclair State advances to the Championship Game on Saturday, November 3rd where they will face top-seeded New York University (12-5-1). The game will be a rematch of last year's title contest won by the Red Hawks on a goal by MARIE PLASKETT with 58 seconds remaining.

Sabaliauskas notched her fifth goal of the season as she took a loose ball and headed it over a crown of Osprey defenders, including goalkeeper SARAH MILLER (Brigantine, NJ/Highland). The ball then trickled in for the game-winner.

The score snapped a streak of 237:32 of scoreless soccer played between the teams, including a 0-0 tie back on September 24th.

Montclair State had an opportunity to take the lead at the 74:56 mark as the Red Hawks were awarded a penalty kick. But Miller came up with a huge save on LAUREN ROTA's (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Indian Hills) shot, diving to her right and knocking the ball away. Richard Stockton, which was outshot 18-9 in the contest, had its own opportunity in the second OT period. KATI CURTIN (Seaville, NJ/Ocean City) had a breakaway that MSU goalkeeper STEPHANIE ROMANKO (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) was able to knock away from 15 yards out.

Romanko finished with two saves for the Red Hawks (13-4-3), while Miller had five for Richard Stockton (11-6-2).
