Women's Basketball Defeated by Salisbury

Upper Montclair, NJ - Junior forward AMY CAMPION (Bowie, MD/Arch. Spalding) scored 17 points while JAIME KOHLENSTEIN (Harrisonburg, VA/Harrisonburg) added 10 as Salisbury University recorded a 69-52 victory over Montclair State in NCAA Division III women's basketball action at Panzer Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

Junior forward STEPHANIE CROLEY (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Red Hawks (4-6), who shot just 31 percent (22-of-70) from the field, including 1-of-14 from three-point range.

Salisbury (7-1) led 22-18 with 8:29 to play before embarking on an 18-3 run to end the half. Campion began the spurt with a jumper and ASHLEY NORRIS (Westminster, MD/Francis Scott Key) added a basket for a 26-lead. After and MSU free throw, CATE BEGLEY (Turnersville, NJ/Paul VI) scored and Campion put in the next six points as the Sea Gull lead grew to 36-19 with 1:52 left before half. JASMINE BATTS (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) hit two foul shots for MSU to make it 36-21, but Salisbury finished off the half with baskets by HEATHER ROMICH (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) and ANNEMARIE RICKES (Latham, NY/Shaker).

Salisbury took its largest lead at 55-27 with 15:17 to go as CYNDI BENJAMIN (Thurmont, MD/Catoctin) scored on a layup, however Montclair made a run and cut the deficit to 60-48 as DONNA MAGLIATO (Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield) nailed a three-pointer with 7:16 to go. But STEPHANIE SZKARADNIK (New Bern, NC/New Bern) scored four of the next five points to put the game away for Salisbury.

The Sea Gulls overcame a very difficult game at the free throw line (3-of-13) by shooting 50 percent (33-of-66) from the field and forced 30 turnovers. STEPHANIE ELLERBE (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) added 12 points and nine rebounds while Batts finished with 11 points and eight caroms.
