Trinity (TX) Rally Hands Defending Champ MSU Opening-Day Loss, 8-6

Atlanta, GA – Trinity University's Armstrong scored on wild pitch and Kenneth Sharp delivered a run-scoring single in the ninth inning as the Texas school knocked off defending national champion Montclair State, 8-6 in the Rawlings Classic on Friday.

Dash Kohlhausen and Mike Roye each drove in a pair of runs as the Tigers (4-1) scored three times in the final two innings. Junior shortstop BRIAN ELLERSON collected two RBI for the No. 1 ranked Red Hawks (0-1), who threatened in the bottom of the ninth before falling.

Montclair led 6-5 in the eighth before Trinity scratched out a run. The Tigers put runners on second and third with one out. MSU elected to walk Kohlhausen to load the bases. Roye was then hit a pitch forcing in the tying run.

Trinity would put together its winning rally in the ninth thanks to a pair of miscues by the Red Hawks. J Armstrong struck out but reached first on an error and went to second on a wild pitch. A ground out moved him to third and he scored on a second wild pitchin giving the Tigers a 7-6 advantage. Two batters later, Sharp stroked a single to center scoring JC Bunch for the two-run cushion.

Conway would single with two out in the ninth, however Steve Edsall fanned the final batter to end the game.

Edsall (1-0) got the victory as he struck out three and allowed four hits over the final three innings. Kevin Rakowski (0-1) took the loss.

Montclair State trailed 2-0 in the second, but gained a 4-2 advantage by the fourth. SCOTT ALLAN had an RBI double in the second with Ellerson plating two in the third on a double for a 3-2 lead. GEORGE BECKER singled in Allan in the fourth.

Kohlhausen's two-run double in the sixth tied the game and the Tigers went back on top in the sixth on a sac fly by Roye. The Red Hawks answered in the seventh. Becker came home on an error and a CRAIG CONWAY single put MSU in front 6-5.

Becker finished with three hits for MSU while DAVE WURST, Conway and Allan recorded two apiece.

Montclair State is back in action at the Rawlings Classic on Saturday, February 24 with a doubleheader. MSU faces Oglethorpe University at 11:30 am followed by a 2:30 pm matchup with Ithaca College.
