Red Hawks Out-Slug North Carolina Wesleyan, 17-9

Rocky Mount, NC -  Senior third baseman CRAIG CONWAY, junior shortstop BRIAN ELLERSON and junior outfielder SCOTT CLARK each drove in three runs as Montclair State gained a measure of revenge against North Carolina Wesleyan with a 17-9 victory on Friday at Bauer Field.

Junior right fielder CHRIS BARAN drove in two runs for the Red Hawks (4-4), who lost to the Battling Bishops (5-4), 17-3 on Tuesday.

Montclair State took a 2-0 lead in the first as Ellerson drove home DAVE WURST with a sacrifice fly with FRANK LONGO scoring an error. NC Wesleyan answered with a three-run bottom of the inning, the last two coming on a two-run triple by Nick Buonocore.

Baran's two-run double in the third regained the lead for the Red Hawks, but that would be short-lived as an error in the bottom of the inning allowed two runs to score giving the hosts a 5-4 advantage.

MSU would go back on top in the fourth. SEAN MORRISON scampered home on a wild pitch with Ellerson's two-run single making the score 7-5. Ellerson would later score on an errant pickoff attempt.

The lead went to 10-5 in the fifth as Wurst and Longo had RBIs.

The Bishops closed the gap to 10-7 in the bottom of the fifth, however Montclair tallied five times in the sixth to extend its lead. GEORGE BECKER drove in the first run with a single with Clark adding two more on a double to left field. Conway followed with a two-run double of his own making the score 15-7.

Clark and Conway would get the final two Red Hawk runs in the eight on a sac fly and RBI single, respectively.

Senior lefthander SCOTT ALLAN (1-0) took advantage of the offensive output by MSU. Allan allowed nine runs, seven earned and six hits in 5 2/3 innings as he battled control issues. He struck out eight but walked 11. JIM WHALEN finished up with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Montclair heads back north to close out its spring trip on Saturday, March 10. MSU will be in Ferrum, VA facing the Panthers of Ferrum.
