Little Falls, NJ – Senior catcher
JEFF SCHRIBER singled home pinch-runner
KERI MORGAN with one out in the bottom of the 11
th as Montclair State prepped for its upcoming NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament appearance with a 10-9 victory over Virginia Wesleyan at Yogi Berra Stadium on Saturday.
Senior third baseman
CRAIG CONWAY and senior designated hitter
SCOTT ALLAN each belted a pair of home runs as the Red Hawks (31-9), fresh off their NJAC championship last weekend, improved to 31-9 with their 17
th victory in the last 18 games.
Scoreless through the first three innings, Montclair State broke on top in the fourth as Conway blasted the first of his two home runs and
SEAN MORRISON collected an RBI single that scored
SCOTT CLARK. The Red Hawks added six more in the fifth to take an 8-0 lead. Wurst connected for a two-run shots and Conway homered for the second time with Allan adding a two-run blast. Morrison capped the inning with an RBI single.
The Marlins (25-17) answered with six runs in the sixth to cut the deficit. Pete Henyan walked with the bases loaded to finish off the Virginia Wesleyan scoring barrage. Allan's second home run of the day made the score 9-6 in the seventh, however Josh Kreiser singled in two runs in the eighth to bring the Marlins within 9-8.
In the ninth, Josh Longe led off with single and was replaced at first by Chris Mazzone. A pair of sacrifices got Mazzone to third which proved important as he would score on a wild pitch, tying the game at 9-9.
Freshman shortstop
P.J. BACCARELLA, who entered the game in the ninth, led off the 11
th with a single and went to second as the throw skipped away. Morgan took over at second for Baccarella and immediately got to third on a sacrifice by Allan. The Marlins intentionally walked
MATT BECHT and
FRANK LONGO to load the bases, however, Schriber came through with the game-winning hit.
Junior left-hander
COREY HAMMAN picked up the victory in relief. Hamman, one of six MSU pitchers to be used, allowed a run and three hits over the final 3 2/3 innings to improve to 9-5. Hamman struck out four. Freshman
JEFF GOGAL got the start and tossed 4 2/3 shutout innings, fanning eight.
Conway, Baccarella, Allan, Morrison and Schriber registered two hits each for MSU.
The Red Hawks now turn their attention toward a potential return trip to the NCAA Division III World Series on Thursday, May 17 when they open play in the Mid-Atlantic Regional at Bear Stadium in Boyertown, PA. The field for the NCAA Tournament will be announced on Monday, May 14.
