Johns Hopkins Ends MSU Winning Streak at 13 in Extra Innings, 10-9

Little Falls, NJ – Right fielder J.R. Taylor lofted a sacrifice fly in the top of the 11th inning that proved to be the difference as Johns Hopkins ended Montclair State's 13-game winning streak with a 10-9 victory at Yogi Berra Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Second baseman Karl Sineath drove in three runs for the Blue Jays (28-10). Left fielder Eric Solomon and catcher Tom Prevas had two RBI apiece while Adam Karson went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.

Senior third baseman CRAIG CONWAY homered and drove in two runs for the Red Hawks (27-9), who lost for the first time since a 7-1 setback against Rutgers-Newark in the first game of a doubleheader on April 14.

In a conference tournament tune-up for both teams, MSU rallied from deficits of 5-2 and 7-5, tying the game with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Trailing by two, SCOTT CLARK opened the inning with a triple and DAVE WURST walked with one out before moving to second on a wild pitch. CHRIS BARAN followed with a two-run single, knotting the contest 7-7.

The Blue Jays went back in from in the top of the 10th on Eric Solomon's two-run single with one out making the score 9-7, however Montclair rallied again. MATT BECHT singled up the middle with one out and came around to score as Clark recorded his second triple in as many innings, trimming the deficit to 9-8. DAVE WURST then came through with a two-out single as the game moved to the 11th inning.

Sineath was hit by a pitch with one out in the 11th and got to third base as a pickoff attempt was thrown away. Taylor then lifted a ball to right allowing Sineath to score with the go-ahead run. KERI MORGAN and JEFF SCHRIBER each singled with one out in the ninth to put the tying and go-ahead runs on base. Following a strikeout for the second out, a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Johns Hopkins intentionally walked Becht to load the bases before reliever Jason Setty retired Clark on a ground out to end the game.

Setty, the ninth pitcher for the Blue Jays, got the win improving to 4-0. He tossed the final three innings. Right-hander JIM WHALEN (0-1) took the loss for Montclair State.

The Red Hawks now turn their attention to Friday, May 4 when it opens play in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament at Yogi Berra Stadium. Top-seeded Montclair faced No. 4 seed Ramapo in the first of two games beginning at 4:00 pm.
