Upper Montclair, NJ - The Montclair State University men's soccer team moved to 2-0 on the 2001 campaign with 3-2 victory over Rhode Island College this afternoon at MSU Soccer Park at Pittser Field.
Montclair senior midfielder
WOOLDY LAPOINTE (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton West) scored two goals for the Red Hawks, including the game-winning goal with 26 minutes left in regulation.
Freshman midfielder
MATT CASWELL (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) notched his first two career assists for MSU, including one on the game-winner. MSU, which opened its season with a 3-2 overtime victory over Washington (MD) College yesterday thanks to Caswell's game-winning goal, finished second in the 2001 Howard Johnson Cup due to goal differential as compared to co-host William Paterson University.
MSU outscored its opponents this weekend, 6-4, while WPU outscored its opposition, 5-2. Both MSU and WPU have now won two Howard Johnson Cups apiece since the event began back in 1998, with the Red Hawks claiming both the inaugural title and last year's crown. RIC opened the scoring just 2:25 into today's contest on a goal by junior forward Scott Main (Exeter, RI/Exeter West Greenwich). MSU senior back
SHANNON SHEPPARD (Belle Mead, NJ/Hillsborough) headed home a Caswell feed off a corner kick just 3:11 later to tie the game, before Lapointe put MSU on top, 2-1, at 11:55 after taking a long pass from junior back
SEAN PASIEKA (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon).
Freshman defender Michael Maciel (E. Providence, RI/Providence Country Day) then tied the game for the Anchormen with just 18 seconds remaining in the first half on a shot from the left side that chipped off the far post and went in. The score remained unchanged until Caswell sprung Lapointe on the right side for the decisive goal at 64:00. Senior goalkeeper
ALEX LUNA (Newark, NJ/Hudson Catholic) made three saves for MSU, while RIC senior netminder Carlos Pinhancos (Cumberland, RI/La Salle) made two stops as the Red Hawks outshot the Anchormen, 15-10. MSU (2-0) returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at CCNY at 3:30 p.m.
