Brockport, NY (9/15/01) - Senior quarterback
ED COLLINS threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more as 18th-ranked Montclair State scored 21 unanswered points en route to a 35-14 over 14th-ranked SUNY-Brockport at Special Olympics Stadium on Saturday.
ERIC MAGRINI hauled in nine passes and scored twice for MSU (2-0), which ended the Golden Eagles 14-game regular-season winning streak. Collins completed 29-of-48 passes for 316 yards.
MIKE ORLANDO had seven catches for 88 yards, including his first touchdown reception since October 9, 1999. Orlando missed the entire 2000 season with injuries.
MSU fell behind 7-0 as Brockport scored two minutes into the game on their first possession of the game as BOB DARNLEY connected with LIONEL RHIM on a 50-yard scoring strike. But Montclair would pull even midway through the period as Collins engineered an 11-play, 76-yard scoring drive, culminating in a 12-yard TD pass to Magrini with 6:10 to play. In the drive, Collins connected with Magrini on the last four completions covering 51 yards.
Montclair then took the lead in the second quarter as they pinned the Golden Eagles deep and forced a short punt that
MARK HALL returned to the Brockport 28. On the next play, Collins hit Orlando for a score and a 14-7 Red Hawk advantage.
Brockport tied the game at 14-14 with 3:48 to go in the half as Darnely hit Rhim for a 34-yard score, but MSU regained the lead for good as
OMAR LUCAS intercepted a pass an returned it 45 yards to the Brockport 3. Two plays later, Collins hit Magrini for a ouchdown and a 21-14 halftime lead.
Collins added two more scores on the ground in the second half for the final score.
Lucas finished with 10 tackles while GARY WEBB (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) added nine and a sack. Montclair State outgained Brockport, 425-271.
