Upper Montclair, NJ - Junior wide receiver
ERIC MAGRINI tied school records with 12 catches and 197 yards and senior running back
ELIJAH FREER ran for three scores as Division III Montclair State knocked off Division I-AA Iona College, 46-20 at Sprague Field this afternoon.
Senior quarterback
ED COLLINS threw for 384 yards and three touchdowns as the 11th ranked Red Hawks began a season 3-0 for the second time in three years. KAZMEL MINOTT (Elmont, NY/Nassau CC) caught a pair of touchdowns for the Gaels (1-1), who defeated MSU, 28-17 in New Rochelle last year in the only other meeting between the schools.
Montclair raced out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter as Freer scored on a two-yard run with 8:18 left and Collins connected with
JASON DEVIRGILIO on a six-yard scoring strike. But Iona scored the next 13 points as they took advantage of two Montclair miscues. A bad punt snapped gave the Gaels the ball at the MSU 2 before BOBBY WATSON (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North) ran in from a yard out. On the ensuing MSU possession, HARRY SUTTON (East Rutherford, NJ/Paramus Catholic) recovered a fumble to set up a touchdown pass from JASON COLLINS (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) to Minot for a 13-12 Iona lead with 9:40 left before halftime. The Red Hawks responded on their next series as
ED COLLINS engineered a 66-yard scoring drive capped off by his own one-yard run. MSU then extended the lead to 27-13 just before the half as
ED COLLINS connected with
JAMEL DORSEY on an 11-yard scoring strike with 54 remaining.
Freer's second TD run, from three yards out, put Montclair ahead 33-13 in the third period, but the Gaels answered back as Minott hauled in a 33-yard pass from LEVAR STOCKTON (S. Dennis, MA/UMass). The TD was set up by a 50-yard kickoff return by Sutton. The Red Hawks pushed the lead back to 19 early in the fourth as
ED COLLINS connected with Magrini on a 30-yard score. Freer then capped off the day with a 24-yard run as he broke three tackles along his way to the end zone. Magrini tied his own record with 12 catches set last year against Buffalo State while his yardage tied the mark of 197 set by Bryan Scipio against Kean in September, 1986. Freer finished with 82 yards on 15 carries while
ED COLLINS completed 25-of-39 passes.
KEITH MIGLIORINO led the Red Hawk defense with eight tackles, a sack and an interception.
Stockton was 6-of-16 for 73 yards and was sacked six times. Minot had three catches for 74 yards while ROB TERRY (South Salem, NY/John Jay) had 79 yards rushing on 23 carries. TOM LAGOMARSINO (Paramus, NJ/Paramus Catholic) had 10 tackles and an interception.
Montclair outgained Iona, 543-163.
