Montclair State Tops Cortland, 28-24

Cortland, NY -- Senior quarterback ED COLLINS threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to junior tight end NICK SERPICO with 10:41 remaining as nationally 10th-ranked Montclair State rallied for a 28-24 New Jersey Athletic Conference victory at SUNY Cortland.

The Red Hawks are off to a 4-0 start for the second time in three years and have won 12 consecutive NJAC games. Montclair's last league loss was a 27-17 decision to Rowan in November of 1998.

Collins finished the game 30-of-49 passing for 321 yards and two touchdowns. He became Montclair's career leader in pass completions with 498. Junior wide receiver MIKE ORLANDO made eight catches for 98 yards and a touchdown and junior wide receiver ERIC MAGRINI grabbed six passes for 95 yards. Magrini has 100 career receptions in 14 games. He is the fifth Red Hawk in school history to reach the century mark in receptions

Cortland had taken a 24-21 lead on a 37-yard field goal by junior George Oostmeyer (Islip/Calhoun) with 13:19 left in the game. The Red Hawks, however, marched 80 yards on nine plays for the winning score. Montclair converted two third-down situations during the drive. On 3rd-and-4 from their own 49 yard line, the Red Hawks completed an 11-yard pass to senior JAMEL DORSEY and gained an extra 15 yards on a face mask penalty. Three plays later on 3rd-and-11 from the Cortland 26-yard line, a Montclair pass fell incomplete but Cortland was called for pass interference, giving the Red Hawks a first down on the 12-yard line. On the next play, Collins connected with Serpico for the touchdown.

Cortland had three ensuing possessions, but two ended with interceptions -- one by freshman linebacker GARY WEBB and the other by senior linebacker RON BROKING. Broking's interception sealed the Red Hawks' victory with 1:25 left.

The Red Dragons took a 7-0 lead on its first possession when sophomore J.J. Tutwiler (Grand Island) connected on a short pass that senior Brian Babst (Mastic Beach/William Floyd) turned into a 49-yard scoring play. Collins hit Orlando on a 16-yard touchdown pass with 14 seconds left in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7.

Montclair took its first lead when junior BRENT GRABLACHOFF made a 44-yard field goal with 9:40 left in the first half. The Red Dragons went ahead 14-10 on a 4-yard scoring pass from Tutwiler toBabst with 6:35 left, but Grablachoff cut the lead to 14-13 with a 41-yard field goal 2:56 before intermission. Cortland drove to the Montclair 32-yard line on its second possession of the second half, but a 4th-and-3 pass by Tutwiler was intercepted in the flat by freshman defensive back BRANDON BRACEY. Bracey returned the ball 46 yards to the Cortland 28-yard line and, three plays later, senior ELIJAH FREER ran in from six yards out. A two-point conversion pass from Collins to Magrini gave the Red Hawks a 21-14 lead.

Cortland tied the game with an 11-play, 55-yard drive on its next possession, capped off by junior Dwayne Lewinson's (Poughkeepsie/Highland) 1-yard touchdown run with 3:11 left in the quarter.

Lewinson led all rushers in the contest with 107 yards on 15 carries. Tutwiler completed 10-of-15 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman Neal Heaton Jr. (Bellport) made four catches and Babst grabbed three passes, two for touchdowns. Junior linebacker KEITH MIGLIORINO led Montclair's defense with 14 tackles, including three for lost yardage. Cortland junior linebacker Doug Luciano (Warwick/Warwick Valley) made 15 stops and intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter that gave the Red Dragons the ball at Montclair's 45-yard line with 8:59 left. The Red Hawks, however, held on defense and forced a Cortland punt.
