LAURA POPES (West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Regional) scored a pair of goals to tie the MSU single-season record as the Red Hawks advanced to the Championship Game of the Wesley College Fall Field Hockey Tournament with a 5-3 triumph over Albright College on Saturday afternoon.
MSU (7-3), which has won five straight - tying the school record - will face host Wesley in the Championship Game on Sunday at 3:00 pm.
Popes tied the single-season mark of 13 goals set by Kristen Eisele in 1997. She tied the game at 2-2 with 2:09 to play before half as she scored unassisted. Albright would regain the lead in the second half as JAMIE ZIMMERMAN tallied her third goal of the contest with 21:52 to play.
Montclair would answer as
JANEL BERTINI (Erial, NJ/Highlands) scored with 10:51 left off a pass from
SARAH LEVINE (Pequannock, NJ/Pequannock). Popes then gave MSU the lead for good with her second goal with 3:07 remaining.
ANDREA ULICNY (Edgewood, NJ/Edgewood Regional) added the final score with eight seconds left.
MSU trailed 2-0 in the first 10 minutes as Zimmerman scored twice. The Red Hawks then go back within one as
ALI BELLINO (Allendale, NJ/Northern Highlands) scored on a penalty stroke.
TRISHA WINKLE (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township) made four saves for MSU, which outshot Albright, 37-9.
