Women's Basketball Inches Past Rowan

Upper Montclair, NJ - Junior center JASMINE BATTS (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) scored 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as Montclair State topped Rowan University, 67-65 in New Jersey Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon. The win was the Red Hawks' first against the Profs since February 23, 1995 - a span of 14 games - when MSU recorded a 73-59 decision in the opening round of the NJAC Tournament.

DYETTE DILLARD (Willingboro, NJ/Willingboro) added 15 points for Montclair State (7-9, 4-6 NJAC), which won its second straight game. CHRISSY DeMARCO (Turnersville, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) finished with 19 points and seven rebounds for Rowan (7-9, 6-4 NJAC), who dropped their second straight.

In a see-saw battle, Montclair built a 51-44 lead with 12:37 to play in the game as DIONNE FLEMING (Jersey City, NJ/St. Anthony's) scored on layup. However, the Profs would outscore MSU 16-6 over the next eight minutes to take a 60-57 lead with 4:24 left. STACI MINUKSIN (Howell, NJ/Howell) and KRISTI McCULLOUGH (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) each had five in the spurt. Montclair would regain the lead on two free throws by Dillard with 1:25 left and the lead went to 65-62 with as Batts hit a short jumper.

Freshman SHIRAH ODEH (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) sank a pair of foul shots to put the Red Hawks up 67-62 with 34 seconds left, but DeMarco nailed a three-pointer from the left side with 22 ticks to go pulling Rowan within two. Montclair then missed consecutive bonus free throw attempts leaving the door open for the Profs. However, KATE DRUMGOOLE's (Fort Lee, NJ/Paramus Catholic) three-point attempt at the buzzer fell short.

KATHY BARBERI (Whitestone, NY/Francis Lewis) added 10 points for Montclair State, which limited Rowan to just 29 percent (11-of-37) shooting in the second half. The Red Hawks also outrebounded the Profs, 51-41. McCullough had 12 points and seven rebounds.
