Martinez Good From Deep as MSU Beats Stockton

Upper Montclair, NJ - Junior guard BEN MARTINEZ (Scotch Plains, NJ/SP-Fanwood) scored 23 points, including five three pointers as Montclair State won for the 11th time in its last 13 games with an 80-64 win over Richard Stockton in New Jersey Athletic Conference men's basketball action at Panzer Gymnasium this afternoon.

HAROLD WILLIAMS (Jersey City, NJ/St. Aloysius) added 18 points and was one of four players in double figures for Montclair State (13-6, 7-5 NJAC). CONRAD BURNSIDE (Pleasantville, NJ/Pleasantville) had 17 points for the Ospreys (11-7, 6-6 NJAC), who have dropped three straight.

Montclair State built a 44-27 halftime lead thanks in part to a 15-6 run to open the game. Tied at 4-4, MSU scored 11 of the games next 13 points to take the lead for good. Williams, who had 16 points in the opening half, began and ended the run with jumpers, while OMAR BOOTHE (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) added four points and JOSEPH THOMAS (Linden, NJ/Linden) nailed a three-pointer. Martinez would push the lead to 22-16 with 8:43 to play as he hit a three. The Ospreys closed within 28-21 with 6:20 to go before half, however the Red Hawks put together a 16-6 run as Martinez collected half of the points.

In the second half, Richard Stockton pulled within 59-54 as CANTRELL HAWKINS (Camden, NJ/Camden) scored on a layup with 7:17 remaining. But Montclair State responded with a 13-4 run over the next five minutes to put the game away. Martinez had seven points in the run as MSU took a 72-58 lead. Thomas then closed out the out the game with eight consecutive free throws.

Boothe finished with 15 points while Thomas had 13 and seven assists for Montclair State, which shot 57 percent (11-of-19) in the second half and 50.9 percent (28-of-55) in the game. MSU outrebounded the Ospreys 33-23.
