Women's Soccer Knocks Off Kean in Overtime

Upper Montclair, NJ (10/19/02) – The Montclair State University women's soccer team won their fourth consecutive 1-0 game today, besting visiting Kean University in overtime at Sprague Field in a key New Jersey Athletic Conference contest. It was also MSU's second straight 1-0 OT win, as the Red Hawks did the same against visiting Stevens Tech back on Monday, Oct. 14.

Freshman midfielder KAYLIN VAN BROOKHAVEN (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) tallied her first career MSU goal at 92:04 to lift the Red Hawks to their fifth win in six games, plus sole possession of fourth place in the conference. MSU is now 7-4-2 overall (3-1-1 NJAC), while Kean is 6-7-1 (2-2-1 NJAC).

Van Brookhaven took a pass from fellow rookie midfielder JESS AMENDOLA (Union, NJ/Union) and fired a low shot past Kean freshman goalkeeper JESSICA KOGEL (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton West), who finished with 17 saves for the Cougars. MSU sophomore forward and leading scorer STEPHANIE SABALIAUSKAS (Edison, NJ/Mt. St. Mary Academy) also assisted on the goal.

Montclair outshot Kean, 34-3, including 19-2 in the first half when the Red Hawks did not allow a shot in the first 26 minutes of play. MSU senior goalkeeper STEPHANIE ROMANKO (N. Brunswick, NJ/N. Brunswick) had two saves for Montclair in recording her fourth straight shutout, her eighth overall this fall and the 41st of her Red Hawk career.

MSU now visits Ramapo College in Mahwah, NJ on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 1:00 p.m. in a game postponed from Sept. 28. The Red Hawks topped the Roadrunners, 6-0, last season in Upper Montclair.
