LEA SMITH (Littlestown, PA/Littlestown) scored a pair of goals as Montclair State defeated SUNY New Paltz, 5-0 in NCAA Division III Field Hockey action at Sprague Field on Tuesday evening.
The win was the third straight for the Red Hawks (9-3) and sixth in their last seven games.
Smith scored the only goal the Red Hawks would need 1:13 into the match as she knocked in a rebound shot past ERICA ENGSTROM (Montauk, NY/East Hampton). The Red Hawks then extended the list to 2-0 in just over four minutes later as Megan Ulicny (Edgewood, NJ/Edgewood) scored off a penalty corner.
In the second half, MSU made it a three-goal advantage as
SARAH LEVINE (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) raced down the right side and slid a pass to
MELISSA HERBERT (Somerville, NJ/Somerville), who then tapped-in the pass from the doorstep. Smith then scored her second goal of the game and sixth of the season to make it 4-0 with 23:15 to go. The final goal of game came off the stick
ERIN BALINT (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick), who notched her first goal of the season.
TRISHA WINKLE (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township) and
ROBYN APICELLI (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional) combined for four saves. Engstrom had six saves for SUNY New Paltz, which was out shot in the contest, 19-5
