MELISSA HERBERT (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) had a goal and an assist as Montclair State topped the University of Scranton, 3-0, in NCAA Division III field hockey action at Sprague Field on Friday evening.
The Red Hawks (5-2) did not allow a shot as they won for the third time in their last four games. KIM REYNOLDS (Larchmont, NY/Mamaroneck) made seven saves for the Royals (3-7), who have lost two straight and three of their last four.
Montclair broke the scoreless contest eight minutes in as Herbert notched her fourth goal of the season. Junior forward Megan Ulicny (Edgewood, NJ/Edgewood Regional) took the initial shot that Reynolds stopped, but Herbert was there to knock in the rebound for a 1-0 MSU advantage.
MSU extended the lead to 2-0 at the 21:43 mark when
LEA SMITH (Littlestown, PA/Littlestown) poked in a loose ball in front of the cage for her first marker of the season. The final goal came off the stick of
SARAH LEVINE (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock), who scored on a breakaway down the right side beating Reynolds to the near corner of the cage.
Junior
TRISHA WINKLE (Forked River, NJ/Lacey) notched her fourth shutout of the season despite not having to make a save. MSU outshot the Royals, 16-0.
