Montclair State Blanks FDU-Madison, 9-0

Upper Montclair, NJ (10/08/02) - Junior LEA SMITH (Littlestown, PA/Littlestown) scored three goals, classmate Megan Ulicny (Edgewood, NJ/Edgewood Regional ) tallied two more and senior DONNA RUSSO (Edgewood, NJ/Edgewood Regional ) had two assists as the Montclair State University field hockey team recorded a 9-0 win over FDU Florham tonight in a non-conference NCAA Division III matchup at MSU's Sprague Field.

The Red Hawks are now 6-2 overall on the year and have won three straight games, all in non-conference play, while the Devils fall to 2-10.

Junior SARAH LEVINE (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) opened the scoring just 3:39 into the game, off a rebound in front by senior MELISSA HERBERT (Somerville, NJ/Somerville). Smith then scored her first goal at the nine-minute mark, followed by Herbert with her team-leading fifth goal of the season at 20:49, before Smith set up a goal by sophomore LISA SMICKLO (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) just under two minutes later.

Smith then scored twice in the last six minutes of the half for a 6-0 MSU halftime lead. Ulicny collected her fourth and fifth goals at 41:58 and 47:11, the second set up by Russo, before Russo set up junior Jen Carnonaro (Howell, NJ/Howell) with 38 seconds remaining in regulation to close out the scoring.

Senior goalkeeper TRISHA WINKLE (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township) had four saves for Montclair in recording her fifth shutout of the season and the 12th of her career as MSU outshot FDU, 27-6.

The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday, Oct. 12, against visiting Messiah (PA) College at 1:00 p.m. at Sprague Field. Messiah recorded a 4-1 win over the visiting Red Hawks last October.
