JASMINE BATTS (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) scored 14 points to lead three players in double figures as host Montclair State routed Brooklyn College, 84-21, in the opening game of the Ford Friendship Tournament held at MSU's Panzer Gymnasium on Saturday evening.
VANESSA DEFREITAS (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) added 11 points and five steals for the Red Hawks (1-0), who committed just one turnover in the contest and held the Bridges to just seven first-half points.
Kelly Wismuller (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) had 12 points for Brooklyn (0-1).
Montclair State opened the game with the first six points and scored led 6-2 before scoring the next 31 points. DeFreitas had nine of her 11 in the run as Montclair built a 37-2 lead with 8:21 to play in the opening half. Meanwhile, the Bridges struggled shooting just 23 percent (3-of-13) with 24 turnovers. The Red Hawks led 48-7 at intermission.
Lyndsey Byron (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) added 10 points off the bench while freshman
AMANDA MULLANEY (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Ford) had nine and four rebounds. Montclair shot 45 percent (37-of-81) from the field and had 23 steals in the game, led by DeFreitas' five.
SHIKEENA LYNARD (Carney's Point, NJ/Penns Grove) had four steals. Faye Michalakos (Brooklyn, NY/Fort Hamilton) led all players in the game with 13 rebounds.
Montclair will face New England College at 3:00 pm in Sunday's matchup in the Ford Friendship Tournament. Brooklyn College will face Rutgers-Newark at 1:00 pm
