ANTWAN DOZIER (Pleasantville, NJ/Pleasntville) scored a season-high 25 points as Montclair State remained unbeaten with a 72-58 victory over New Jersey City in New Jersey Athletic Conference Men's Basketball action at the Athletic and Recreation Center on Wednesday evening.
JOSEPH THOMAS (Linden, NJ/Linden) added 18 points for the Red Hawks (6- 0, 4-0 NJAC), who are off to their best start since the 1999-2000 season. The victory also avenged three losses to the Gothic Knights (2- 5, 0-4 NJAC) last season, including two in overtime and one in the ECAC Metro Semifinals.
Montclair led 18-15 with 9:35 to play in the opening half before going on a 19-3 run over the next eight minutes.
BEN MARTINEZ (Scotch Plains, NJ-SP Fanwood) began a run of nine straight points by MSU with a free throw and Dozier added a dunk before Thomas scored six straight points, including a three-pointer for a 27-15 advantage with 6:21 left in the half. After NJCU scored three points, Martinez and Dozier each hit a foul shot before Thomas punctuated the run with a three-pointer for a 37-18 lead with 1:22 left in the half. Thomas added a jumper with three seconds to go to give MSU a 39-20 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Red Hawks led by double digits the entire way and took their largest lead of the game with 15:52 left as Martinez sank two free throws for a 47-23 lead. New Jersey City would get as close as 10 with 6:45 to play as Reginald Wright scored on a layup. However, Dozier connected on consecutive three-pointers to restore the 64-48 with 4:44 remaining. Martinez finished with 14 points and seven rebounds for the Red Hawks, who held New Jersey City to just 32.9 percent shooting (23-of-70) in the game. George Thomas () had 13 points for the Gothic Knights, who are off to their worst start in league play since the 1970's.
The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday, December 14 as they travel to Camden to meet the Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers-Camden at 3:00 pm. The game is MSU's last before the Holiday break.
