Upper Montclair, NJ - Senior guard
JOSEPH THOMAS (Linden, NJ/Linden) scored 16 points to pace four players in double figures as Montclair State used a key second-half run to defeat Richard Stockton College, 72-57 in New Jersey Athletic Conference Men's Basketball action at Panzer Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.
JEROME TRAWICK (Newark, NJ/Clifford Scott) had 15 points for the Red Hawks (4-0, 2-0 NJAC), who scored 11 straight points over a three-minute stretch in the second half to put the game away. Todd Lowber (Delran, NJ/Delran) had 15 points to lead Richard Stockton, which was outrebounded 40-29 in the game.
Leading 50-48 with 8:12 left in the game,
ELLIS SHERROD (Newark, NJ/Parsippany) hit a short jumper to ignite the run and
PIERRE MITCHELL (Newark, NJ/East Side) extended the lead to seven points with a long three-pointer.
BEN MARTINEZ (Scotch Plains, NJ/SP-Fanwood) scored on a three-point play and Sherrod followed up with a layup to make the score 60-48 with 5:51 to go. Mitchell closed out the run with a free throw.
Trawick scored 10 points in the first half as Montclair State took a 29-23 lead into halftime. Leading 13-11 with 9:40 left in the period, the Red Hawks scored nine of the game's next 11 points to take a nine-point lead. Martinez scored on a layup and
MICHAEL GLUCK (Union, NJ/Union) tipped in a rebound to make the score 17-11. Lowber answered with a layup for Stockton, but Trawick scored consecutive layups and Thomas hit a free throw as Montclair took its largest lead of the half at 22-13 with 3:46 left.
Mitchell added 11 points while Sherrod finished with 10 points for Montclair State, which shot 56 percent in the second half. Thomas and Mitchell each collected seven rebounds for MSU. Jorge Arroyo (Mystic Island, NJ/Pinelands) had 13 points and eight rebounds for the Ospreys, who shot just 2-of-11 from three-point range in the game.
