Jersey City, NJ - The Montclair State women's basketball team fell back to .500 on the season as the Red Hawks had their three-game winning streak snapped with a 71-54 loss to New Jersey City University on Wednesday evening.
STEPHANIE ELLERBE (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) finished with 17 points and six rebounds for MSU (12-12, 8-9 NJAC), who suffered from cold shooting (26 percent) and turnover problems (31) in the game.
Montclair trailed 31-27 at halftime, but managed a 42-42 tie with 10 minutes to go. However, the Gothic Knights went on a 15-3 run over the next five minutes to put the game away.
Ellerbe hit two three pointers in the game giving her 79 in her career, tying the record set by Jill Schultz from 1995-1998.
KATHY BARBERI (Whitestone, NY/Francis Lewis) had nine points while JASMINE BATTS (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) and STEPHANIE CROLEY (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) each pulled down 11 rebounds in the contest.
Montclair closes out its regular season on Saturday, February 16 as they host the defending NJAC champion The College of New Jersey Lions. The Red Hawks need a victory in order to be eligible for the ECAC Division III Metro Tournament, which begins on February 27. Last year, Montclair reached the semifinals before bowing out to eventual champion Richard Stockton.
