Fort Myers, FL (3/11/02) -- Senior righthander TARA TODARO (Lodi, NJ/Lodi) tossed a no-hitter in the first game and sophomore righthander CRYSTAL SWEENEY (Edison, NJ/Edison) fanned a school-record 16 batters in the second as Montclair State swept a pair of games Gene Cusic Classic on Monday.
The Red Hawks blanked St. Mary's (IN), 3-0 and then exploded for 13 runs as they defeated Wilmington (OH), 13-2 to even their record at 2-2 on their 10-game trip.
Against St. Mary's, Montclair would get the only run it would need in the first inning as DIANA AUTERI (Lyndhurst, NJ/St. Mary's) drove home a run.
That would be all of the support Todaro, who struck out nine, would need as she hurled the first no-hitter of her career and the 18th in school history. Current assistant coach
KIM CARUSO was the last pitcher to accomplish the feat against New Jersey City on April 6, 2000.
In the second game, the MSU bats exploded for 13 runs, including six in the 7th inning alone. That was more than enough for Sweeney, who broke the single-game mark for strikeouts set by Sharon Ormsbee against Calvin, MI in March, 1997.
