Softball Powers Its Way to Sweep in Florida

Fort Myers, FL (3/14/02) -- The Montclair State softball team made it three straight wins as they used a strong offensive showing to sweep a pair of games at the Gene Cusic Classic on Thursday afternoon.

Senior second baseman TARA GIALANELLA (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris) and DANA SPRAGUE (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) combined to drive in five runs as Montclair State recorded 7-2 victory over Wheaton (MA) in the first game. In the second game, KARI McDONNELL (Wirghtstown, NJ/Northern Burlington) homered twice and drove in four runs as MSU posted their second shutout of the season against Defiance, 8-0.

The double-header sweep was the 349th and 350th career wins for head coach Anita Kubicka. Kubicka, MSU's all-time winningest coach is 350-144-1 in her 11-plus seasons.

The Red Hawks jumped on the board early against the Wheaton (MA), a team that finished third in the NCAA Championships in 2001. MSU scored three runs in the second and aaded four in the sixth.

Gialanella led the Red Hawk hitting attack going 3-for-4 with three RBI while Sprague was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in. STEPHANIE ROMANKO (No. Brunswick, NJ/No. Brunswick) was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

CRYSTAL SWEENEY (Edison, NJ/Edison) picked up the victory. Sweeney (3-1) allowed seven hits and two runs (one earned) walking two and striking out seven.

In the second game, Montclair led 2-0 after three as McDonnell belted a solo homer. The Red Hawks then added four runs in the fourth, three coming off the bat of McDonnell, who hit her fourth-round tripper of the season. McDonnell went 3-for-3 in the game.

Romanko, SHANNA LeCOMPTE (Lakewood, NJ/Lakweood) and NICOLE PACICCO (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional) each had an RBI for MSU.

TARA TODARO (Lodi, NJ/Lodi) picked up the win, improving her record to 2-2. Todaro allowed four hits and struck out 10.
