Little Falls,NJ - STEVE WANAMAKER (Valley Cottage, NY/Nyack) drove in three runs and KYLE JOHNSON (Hornell, NY/Hornell) pitched 8 1/3solid innings as Cortland State defeated Montclair State, 6-3, ina battle of NCAA Division III Top 10 teams at Yogi Berra Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Johnson improved to 3-0 as Red Dragons defeated Montclair for the third straight time. The freshman righthander allowed seven hits and one earned run. He struck out four and walked one. Corey Hamma (Flanders,NJ/Roxbury) took the loss to fall to 2-1. Hamman went seven innings allowing five runs and eight hits as he lost for the first time in nine decisions. Hamman had not lost since April 14, 2001 against Rutgers-Newark.
Cortland snapped a 1-1 tie in the seventh as pinch-runner JOSH HOMER (Groton, NY/Groton)stole home on a first-and-third delayed steal. The Red Dragons then broke the game open in the eighth with three runs. JEFF FLEGLER (Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester) delivered an RBI single and Wanamaker drove in two with a double.
Montclair rallied in the ninth with two runs.
TOMMY WARTH (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus)drove in a run with a fielder's choice and
MICHAEL ALLAN (Glen Gardner,NJ/Delaware Valley Regional) singled home a run to pull MSU within 6-3. But CRAIG ROBINSON (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) struck out
ETHAN BOYD (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) with runners on second and third to end the game.
Wanamaker and PAT D'AURIA (Nyack, NY/Nyack) each had two hits for Cortland. Dyckman had two hits for MSU, which collected 10 in the game.
