TCNJ Tallies 4-2 Win Against Montclair State

Ewing, NJ - Junior outfielder Jamie Riese (Hamilton Square, NJ/Steinert) drove in two Lions' runs and sophomore Brad Downs (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) tossed seven strong innings to help lift The College of NJ (18-7) to a 4-2 win over Montclair State (16-6) Thursday afternoon in NJ Athletic Conference action.

Downs (1-1) picked up his first win of the season after tossing seven plus innings, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts. Riese was 2-4 overall on the day with his third double of the season and two RBI.

The Lions tacked on single runs in the second and third innings for a 2-0 advantage before MSU got on the scoreboard in the sixth. Shortstop BRIAN ELLERSON (Bayonne, NJ/Hudson Catholic) singled down the left field line to drive in teammate ETHAN BOYD (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) who reached on a lead off walk to put the Red Hawks within one.

The College of NJ struck back in the bottom of the same inning as catcher Segio Sencion (Paterson, NJ/Paterson Catholic) pushed across two runs with a double to left field for a 4-1Lions' advantage.

The Red Hawks rallied for one run in the top of the ninth as ADAM CERMINARO (Wall, NJ/Wall) sacrificed home pinch-hitter George Backer (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne), but that was all MSU would get out of the bases-loaded situation.

Sophomore JEFF GOGAL (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season, and first loss in 11 decisions dating back to March, 2001. Gogal allowed four runs on six hits in five plus innings of work, striking out four and walking five. Southpaw JAY ROMAN logged the final three innings of shutout ball, allowing only one hit.
