Softball Blanks Rutgers-Newark in Doubleheader Sweep

Newark, NJ (4/2/02) -- The Montclair State University softball team won for the fifth time in its last eight games by sweeping host Rutgers-Newark today, 15-0 and 8-0, in a a pair of five-inning games. MSU is now 12-6 overall and 3-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

Red Hawk senior pitcher TARA TODARO (Lodi, NJ) struck out the side in the first three innings at Newark en route to pitching her second no-hitter of the season and of her career, striking out 13 of the 17 batters she faced. Sophomore shortstop DIANA AUTERI (Lyndhurst, NJ) led MSU offensively by going 4-for-4 with a double and four RBIs while also scoring three runs. Junior infielder SHANNA LeCOMPTE (Lakewood, NJ) put the Red Hawks up, 3-0, in the first inning after hitting a two-run home run, the first of her MSU career. Montclair then added five runs in both the second and third innings to go up, 13-0, and finished with 15 hits in all (24 on the day).

MSU sophomore pitcher CRYSTAL SWEENEY (Edison, NJ) picked up her third shutout this season with a three-hit, five-strikeout performance in Game Two. She also scored the first run of her MSU career after drawing a walk in the fifth inning. Freshman infielder NICOLE PACICCO (Tinton Falls, NJ) batted 2-for-3 with two singles and added an RBI while also scoring two runs for the Red Hawks, who broke a 2-0 game open with four runs in the fourth inning.
