BRIAN ELLERSON (Bayonne, NJ/Hudson Catholic) went 4-for-7 and scored three runs as Montclair State used a eight-run third inning en route to a 16-7 victory over York College (PA) in the 4th Annual Lou Greco/John Cowan Memorial Baseball Tournament at Yogi Berra Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
JOE GIACOMIAZZIO (E. Brunswick, NJ/E. Brunswick) had a double and three RBI for the Red Hawks (22-15). Brett Munch (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) and Tom Bender (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) each had two RBI for the Spartans (30-13).
Montclair led off the third inning with three singles off the bats of
GEORGE BECKER (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne),
ETHAN BOYD (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) and Ellerson. The Red Hawks then took the lead with a bases-clearing double from designated-hitter Giacomiazzio to put MSU ahead 3-2. Montclair then mounted a rally sending nine more batters to the plate and scoring five more runs including RBI singles from Tommy Wart (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus),
ADAM CERMINARO (Wall, NJ/Wall), Boyd, and Ellerson.
JEFF GOGAL (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) picked up his team leading seventh victory. Gogal (7-1) went seven innings allowing four runs and seven hits. He struck out six and walked six. Keith Falcone (Chester Springs, PA/Bishop Shanahan) (3-4) suffered the loss allowing nine runs (eight earned) and 14 hits in five innings. He struck out no one and walked four.
Ashley Swope (Manchester, PA/Northeastern) had three hits for the Spartans who had 13 hits in the game. Becker finished the game with three hits while teammates Boyd and Giacomiazzio had two hits a piece for Montclair State.
