Red Hawks Suffer First Loss at No. 1 TCNJ

Ewing, NJ (9/14/02) - The Montclair State field hockey team suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday as they fell to top-ranked The College of New Jersey, 6-2. The Lions avenge a 4-3 overtime loss to Montclair last season, the Red Hawks first in 21 years over TCNJ.

Junior forwards Jessica Hamway (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) and Lauren Wooster (Clementon, NJ/Overbrook Regional) combined for three goals and two assists as TCNJ improves to 5-0 on the year and 1-0 in league action. The Red Hawks drop to 2-1 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.

The Lions started the scoring just 1:03 into the game as senior co-captain Laura Chowansky (Sea Girt, NJ/Manasquan) swept in a feed from senior co-captain Grace Rarich (Titusville, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central). After a 20-minute span of scoreless action, Hamway tallied her first of the game as she deflected a hit in from junior forward Danielle Bechtel (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee). Sophomore midfielder Kim Feeley (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) netted her first goal of the 2003 campaign at 35:00 as she tipped in a pass from Wooster after a Lion penalty corner, giving TCNJ a 3-0 advantage at halftime.

Wooster picked up her first tally of the year in the second stanza as she converted a feed from Bechtel during another Lion corner. Junior defender Jackie Scullin (Holland, PA/Council Rock) continued the onslaught by deflecting Wooster's pass at the post. Hamway notched her second goal at 52:18, off an assist by senor forward Abbie Smith (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch). Montclair State disrupted TCNJ's shutout bid as senior MELISSA HERBERT (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) tipped in a loose ball in front of the cage. Junior Jen Carbonaro (Howell, NJ/Howell) converted on a penalty stroke at 65:59 for the Red Hawks' second and final tally of the game.

The Lions' senior goalie Sara Bouroult (Boonton, NJ/Boonton) now has five wins on the year, making no saves and allowing one goal in 61 minutes of work. Freshman Kristina Beyel (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) played in the last nine minutes of the game for TCNJ, registering one save and one goal against.

MSU's junior keeper TRISHA WINKLE (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township) took the loss for the Red Hawks as she recorded seven saves in 55 minutes, while rookie ROBYN APICELLI (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional) stopped no shots and yield no goals in 15 minutes.
