Geneva, NY (9/15/02) – Host William Smith College scored two half goals at it finished unbeaten in the 2002 Heron Cup following a 2-0 victory over Montclair State on Sunday afternoon.
The loss was the second straight for the Red Hawks (2-3).
In the second game of the afternoon , the Herons dominated play, as Montclair was only able to get four shots off. William Smith was composed as they played the ball on the ground, controlling the possession and tempo of the game.
Building the attack from the back, the Herons finally got on the board in the 30th minute when a Montclair defender deflected a shot by Kristin Falzarano (Morristown/Morris Plains, N.J.) past the Red Hawk goalie.
William Smith struck again eight minutes later when Jenn Tibbens (Sherburne-Earlville/Sherburne, N.Y.) found a sprinting Shelly Smith (G. Ray Bodley/Fulton, N.Y.) in the box. Smith flicked the pass from Tibbens with the outside of her foot into the opposite corner of the goal to put the Herons up 2-0.
William Smith goalie Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Scottsville, N.Y.) did not see much action, making three saves during the 90 minutes to earn her second shutout of the season. Montclair keeper
STEPHANIE ROMANKO (North Brunswick/North Brunswick, N.J.) stayed busy, notching six saves on the afternoon.
Romanko and Stephanie Sabaliasukas (Edison, NJ/Mt. St. Mary Academy) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
