Upper Montclair, NJ (9/18/02) - The Montclair State University men's soccer team won its fifth game in six outings this season, topping the College of Florham at Fairleigh Dickinson University, 3-1, today at MSU Soccer Park at Pittser Field. Montclair is now 5-1 this season, while FDU Florham falls to 3-2-1. MSU is also 3-0 at home this fall, plus has won six of its last seven games dating back to 2001.
The Red Hawks took a 1-0 lead at 5:33 of the first half when sophomore ANDREW BOSALASCO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) scored from 15 feet out off an assist by freshman defender MIKE HOGAN (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany). Sophomore midfielder ANDREW MACHO (N. Arlington, NJ/N. Arlington) made it 2-0 at 7:22 off a feed by senior forward ATIBA YUSUF (East Orange, NJ/East Orange), followed by a Yusuf goal at 31:26 that was set up by sophomore middie MATT CASWELL (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway). Yusuf leads MSU in scoring so far this season with five goals and one assist for 11 points in six outings.
Freshman forward YALY KLOEPPER (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) got FDU on the board at 59:45, scoring from in close, but that was as close as the visiting Devils would get. MSU sophomore goalkeeper CHRIS OWEN (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) finished with four saves, while FDU freshman ZACH ROTH (West Orange, NJ/Morris Catholic) had one stop as the Devils outshot the Red Hawks, 12-11.
Montclair State opens its 2002 New Jersey Athletic Conference campaign on Saturday, Sept. 21, when it hosts Rutgers-Camden at 1:00 p.m. at MSU Soccer Park.
