Upper Montclair, NJ (9/21/02) - The Montclair State University men's soccer team won its 2002 New Jersey Athletic Conference opener today, a 1-0 overtime decision over visiting Rutgers-Camden at MSU Soccer Park at Pittser Field. MSU is now 6-1overall this year and 4-0 at home, while R-C falls to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the NJAC.
Sophomore midfielder ANDREW MACHO (N. Arlington, NJ, N. Arlington) tallied the game's only goal with 7:56 remaining in the first sudden-death overtime period, lofting a shot from the left wing untouched to the far side of the R-C net. The goal, Macho's second of the season, came after 92:04 of play, with Montclair outshooting Camden, 21-11.
Sophomore goalkeeper CHRIS OWEN (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes, NJ) finished with four saves for the Red Hawks in recording his fourth shutout this season, while sophomore RYAN TROST (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) notched 10 saves for the Scarlet Raptors, including two point-blank stops on MSU senior forward and leading scorer ATIBA YUSUF (East Orange, NJ/East Orange) midway through the first half. Trost also stopped a header by MSU senior forward MARK SA (Newark, NJ/Hudson Catholic) at the right post late in regulation, following a Montclair corner kick.
Montclair State returns to NJAC action on Wednesday, Sept. 25, when it visits Rutgers-Newark at 3:30 p.m. Rutgers-Camden hosts the College of New Jersey that same evening at 7:00 p.m.
