Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Second Half Surge Guides No. 12 Field Hockey Past Drew

Upper Montclair, NJ (9/30/03)  - Junior defender LISA SMICKLO netted a hat trick, and senior forward LEA SMITH added two goals as 12th-ranked Montclair State used a solid second half to defeat Drew University in NCAA Division III Field Hockey action at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.

JEN CARBONARO added a goal and an assist for the Red Hawks (7-1), who have won three straight. Kara Fetter had a goal and an assist for Drew (5-2).

Smicklo, who had just three career goals entering the match, became the third different MSU player to record a hat trick in a game this season. SARAH LEVINE scored three times against The College of New Jersey on September 13th, and MEGAN ULICNY had three versus New Paltz on September 24th.

Levine had given MSU a 1-0 lead 3:27 into the contest, however, Drew tied it up with just over 20 minutes left as Ellen Balkovec finished off a 2-on-1 breakaway. Smicklo then regained the lead for MSU six minutes later as she banged home a rebound past Ranger goalkeeper Tara Connelly. That goal came after Connelly had stopped four successive shots by Montclair. Fetter would knot the game at 2-2 with 3:04 left in the first half, but Smicklo gave the Red Hawks the lead for good as the half expired. MSU was awarded a penalty corner as the clock timed out, and after two shots saved by Connelly, Smicklo again knocked in the rebound to give Montclair State a 3-2 halftime lead.

In the second half, Smith scored her second of the game from 10 yards out at the 48:23 mark, and Smicklo got the hat trick 1:58 later as she took a crossing pass from Levine on the right side and flipped it in. Carbonaro capped off Montclair's scoring with a goal on a penalty stroke with 4:12 left.

TRISHA WINKLE made six saves for MSU before leaving with 11:45 remaining. Sophomore ROBYN APICELLI finished up making one save. Connelly had 11 saves for Drew, which was outshot in the contest, 25-15.
