William Paterson Tops Women's Soccer in Overtime

Wayne, NJ (10/1/03) - Senior forward Erin Finn (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) scored with 43 seconds left in the second overtime, giving William Paterson a 3-2 triumph over Montclair State on Wednesday night at Wightman Field.

Senior forward Amy Wieszun (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) assisted on the tally and finished with a goal and two assists for the Pioneers (6-3-1, 2-1-1 NJAC). Meanwhile, Montclair State lost its first New Jersey Athletic Conference match and fell to 6-2 overall, 3-1 in the NJAC.

Montclair State forced overtime when sophomore forward KELLY DUTKO (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) lofted a high shot into the left corner of the net, forging 2-2 tie.

After the Red Hawks took a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to a goal by senior midfielder KRISTIN WEBER (Union, NJ/Union), the Pioneers scored 1:40 into the second half when Wieszun deposited a rebound into an open net. It was the first goal MSU had surrendered in just over 406 minutes of play.

William Paterson struck again at the 62:21 mark when junior forward Kat McPhail (Sparta, NJ/Hopatcong) took a pass from Wieszun and grounded the ball over the goal line. This gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead against a Red Hawks team that allowed only two scores in its previous seven games.

William Paterson held a 10-8 edge on shots as sophomore goalkeeper Meaghan Koppel (Spotswood, NJ/Spotswood) made five saves. MSU junior netminder SUSAN HINDS (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) also stopped five shots.
