No. 10 Field Hockey Rallies to Top Kean in Overtime

Union, NJ (10/15/03)  - Senior forward MEGAN ULICNY scored from the top of the circle nine minutes into the overtime session to lift 10th-ranked Montclair State to a come-from-behind, 4-3 victory over Kean University in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) field hockey action.

With the victory, the Red Hawks improved to 10-2 overall and 3- 0 in the NJAC, while Kean fell to 12-2 and 1-1 in conference play. It is the second straight year Montclair State needed overtime to defeat the Cougars. Last season, MSU posted a 2-1 win on a goal by SARAH LEVINE.

Tina Broomfield scored twice in three minutes in the first half to give the Cougars a 2-0 advantage. Just over a minute later, the Red Hawks got on the board on a penalty stroke by JEN CARBONARO.

In the second half, the Cougars extended its advantage when Michelle Carlani scored off her own rebounded shot to give Kean a 3-1 lead with just over 30 minutes left. The Red Hawks moved within one goal when JEN SOSS scored unassisted at the 42:35 mark. Montclair would tie the game in the 51st minute when KRISTEN SWARTZ converted a pass from Levine.

For the Cougars, Concetta Valerio made 16 saves in goal, while MSU's TRISHA WINKLE had 10 saves for the Red Hawks.

The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday, October 18, as they host the Monarchs of Kings College (PA) at Sprague Field. It is the start of a four-game homestand for Montclair.
