Smith's First Half Tally Leads No. 10 Field Hockey Past King's

Upper Montclair, NJ (10/18/03)  - Senior forward LEA SMITH scored near the midway point of the first half as 10th-ranked Montclair State edged Kings College (PA), 1-0, in NCAA Division III Field Hockey action at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

MEGAN ULICNY recorded the assist, and goalkeeper TRISHA WINKLE notched her fifth shutout of the season as the Red Hawks won their second straight and improved to 11-2 on the season. Katie Dalo had eight saves for the Monarchs (9-7), who dropped their second consecutive 1-0 decision.

Smith snapped the scoreless tie at the 20:24 mark as she notched her fifth goal of the season and first since October 1st, a span of six games. Off a penalty corner, JEN CARBONARO took the stick-stop and flipped the ball to Ulicny, who then slid a pass to Smith all alone in the middle of the 10-yard line. Smith then cracked a shot that beat Dalo to the right post for the game's only score.

Each team had its opportunities to put goals on the board. Dalo denied the Red Hawks two scoring chances three minutes after the score. The senior stopped Smith on a shot from in front and then came up with a big save against SARAH LEVINE on the rebound to keep the game at a goal differential.

Winkle would keep the Monarchs off the board in the second half with all three of her saves, the first coming against Suzanne Thompson, whose wide-open shot was kicked away at 39:42. Winkle then made saves on consecutive shots by Megan O'Brien and Lindsay Sabo with 16:30 to play, preserving the lead.

Montclair State outshot Kings, 19-6, and held an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners.
