No. 8 Field Hockey Shuts Out William Paterson 2-0

Upper Montclair, NJ (10/22/03)  - Senior forward SARAH LEVINE and senior midfielder MEGAN ULICNY each scored a goal as eighth-ranked Montclair State remained atop the New Jersey Athletic Conference field hockey standings with a 2-0 victory over local rival William Paterson at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.

Senior goalkeeper TRISHA WINKLE made three saves for her sixth shutout of the season as the Red Hawks (12-2) won their third straight and remained unbeaten in the NJAC at 4-0. Montclair can claim its first conference crown with a win at NCAA defending champion Rowan University on November 4th. Junior goalkeeper Kelly Harchetts had eight saves for the Lady Pioneers (12-4, 0-4 NJAC).

The Red Hawks dominated the first half outshooting WPU, 13-0; however, the Lady Pioneers were kept in the contest due in part to the play of Harchetts, who made seven saves. Harchetts denied the Red Hawks three scoring chances at the 12-minute mark to keep the game scoreless. Montclair State would finally break through just over two minutes later as LEA SMITH moved in from the left side and flipped in a pass that Levine redirected inside the right post for the game's first goal. MSU led 1-0 at the break.

In the second half, Harchetts again came up big as she stopped Levine in front a minute into the half. But again, MSU kept the pressure up and extended the lead at 44:17 on almost a carbon copy of the first goal. Levine intercepted a pass on the left side and moved in before tapping the ball to Ulicny, who knocked a shot inside the right post for her team-leading 14th goal of the season and a 2-0 lead.

Trailing by two, William Paterson finally got its attack going as in the 48th minute. Mindy Coxe fired a shot that Winkle stopped, and WPU was then awarded a penalty corner. Off the corner, Heidi Koening and Krista Hinshillwood each had scoring chances, but Winkle came up with the save each time to preserve the lead.

Montclair outshot William Paterson, 17-6 in the contest and held an 11-4 advantage in penalty corners.
