Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 8 Field Hockey Tops Wilkes for Fourth Straight Victory

Upper Montclair, NJ (10/25/03)  - Senior forward LEA SMITH had two goals and one assist, and senior midfielder MEGAN ULICNY set the Montclair State single-season scoring mark as the 10th-ranked Red Hawks blanked Wilkes University, 5-0, in NCAA Division III Field Hockey action at Sprague Field on Saturday evening.

NICOLE PUSO and LISA SMICKLO each had a goal as MSU (13-2) won its fourth straight. Desiree Podarasky had four saves, and Carli Boccardi added two for the Lady Colonels (7-9), who dropped their second straight game to a Top-10 opponent.

Smith scored the only goal the Red Hawks would need just 2:30 into the contest as she notched her sixth goal of the season. Ulicny's shot off a penalty corner was blocked; however, the ball bounced out to Smith on the right side, where she slid the shot in from eight yards out.

Puso extended the lead to 2-0 just over six minutes later with her third marker of the season, and Smith gave Montclair a three-goal advantage at the 11:23 mark off an assist by Ulicny. The assist gave Ulicny 13 on the season, tying her with Janel Bertini (2000) for the single-season mark. Smicklo put Montclair up 4-0 at the half as she banged home a tipped pass on the doorstep.

In the second half, Ulicny scored her 15th goal of the season as she took a corner insert and moved five yards in before uncorking a shot past Boccardi. The goal gave Ulicny 43 points on the season, surpassing the mark of 41 set by Laura Popes in her All-American year of 2001.

TRISHA WINKLE made one save in 61 minutes of action before sophomore ROBYN APICELLI finished up the last nine minutes as Montclair recorded its seventh shutout overall and third straight. MSU outshot Wilkes, 21-1.
