Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 8 Field Hockey Blows Past Eastern Connecticut 8-0

Upper Montclair, NJ (10/29/03)  - The Montclair State University field hockey team, ranked eighth in NCAA Division III, completed the home portion of its 2003 regular season with an 8-0 non-conference victory tonight over Eastern Connecticut State University at Sprague Field.

Senior midfielder MEGAN ULICNY established an MSU single-game record with five assists, breaking the mark of four assists achieved earlier this season by classmate LEA SMITH in a win over Ramapo back on October 8.

MSU improved to 14-2 overall this fall, including 10-0 at home, winning its fifth straight game and its 10th in its last 11 outings. ECSU fell to 4-13 on the year while becoming Montclair State's eighth shutout victim.
Montclair took a 1-0 lead just 2:51 into the game as senior SARAH LEVINE scored off a scramble in front. Levine then made it 2-0 at 5:14, assisted by classmate Ulicny, who set a new single-season record with her 14th assist of the season. Ulicny broke the mark set by Janel Bertini in 2000.

Eastern Connecticut first threatened with just less than 20 minutes remaining in the first half. Senior Amber Drake got off three shots but was denied by MSU goalkeeper TRISHA WINKLE on the first two tries, and then hit the outside of the right post on the third attempt. Ulicny picked her second assist of the night on a goal by freshman JEN SOSS at 22:19 for a 3-0 Montclair lead that became 4-0 with 38 seconds remaining in the first half on Soss's second goal, this one assisted by Smith.

Junior LISA SMICKLO put MSU up, 5-0, with 25:35 remaining in regulation, assisted by Ulicny, who then set up junior DANIELLE PICINICH less than two minutes later. Ulicny now boasts 48 points on the year as she continues to re-set her own Red Hawk record for most points in a single MSU season.

Senior NICOLE PUSO increased MSU's lead to 7-0 with just under 20 minutes left, before Ulicny set up sophomore ERIN BALINT with 17:46 left, closing out the scoring while prompting goaltending changes for both teams.

Winkle finished with three saves for Montclair in 52:14 of action, with ROBYN APICELLI making one save in relief. Freshman Michelle Santora posted eight stops for ECSU before giving way to junior Meredith Bogue and sophomore Damaly Auguste, who combined for three saves.

The Red Hawks outshot the visiting Warriors, 25-7, on the evening and had the advantage in penalty corners, 11-5.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 1, with a game at Juniata (PA) College, before closing out the regular season three days later at Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference battle.
