Jersey City, NJ (10/15/03) - In a game where two soccer teams dealt with sustained wind gusts of 30-50 miles per hour blowing off of Newark Bay, it was Montclair State University posting a 7-0 win over New Jersey City at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field on Wednesday afternoon.
LIZ D'ALTO (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) scored a pair of goals as the Red Hawks improved to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference with their eighth shutout of the season. Gina Sgroi (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst), the NCAA Division III leader in saves, made 26 stops for the Gothic Knights (1-9-1, 0-6-0 NJAC), one shy of her career high.
Montclair State got all the scoring it would need just 3:25 into the game as
KELLY DUTKO (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert), the NJAC Offensive Player of the Week, tracked down a thru ball into the box from
KRISTIN WEBER (Union, NJ/Union) for a breakaway that ended with her eighth goal of the season.
Freshman midfielder,
TARA KUPOGLU (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) made it a 2-0 game at 14:10 as she scored the first goal of her career. Kupoglu, who missed the first 10 games with a knee injury, stole the ball from a defender and went in one-on-one for the score.
JESS AMENDOLA (Union, NJ/Union) gave the Red Hawks a 3-0 lead at 22:33 as she scored off Weber's second assist of the half.
In the second half, MSU added to the score thanks in part of the blustery winds. Kaylan Van Brookhoven (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo), who was denied on a penalty kick earlier, got her second tally of the season after her chip shot was knocked out of the hands of Sgroi by a gust of win. Van Brookhoven was credited with the goal. D'Alto scored the next two goals for a 6-0 lead with just over 20 minutes remaining. Her first score was a shot from 35 yards out that changed direction in the wind and found the upper right corner of the net. She then took a corner kick that was re-directed into the net by the wind as well.
LAUREN SIGNORELLA (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) scored the final goal on a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced down into the net.
SUSAN HINDS (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) and
KRISTIN KUHMANN (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South) each played a half in the contest with neither having to make a save.
